How much to tip a tour guide, by tour type
There is no single number, because tours are not sold the same way. Independent operators price a trip as one product, so a percentage of what you paid tracks the value of the work. Escorted coach and river tours put a salaried tour director in front of a rotating group for days at a time, so the industry settled on a flat rate per head, per day instead.
| Tour type | Method | Usual band |
|---|---|---|
| Walking tour (paid) | % of tour cost | 10% to 20% |
| Food or drink tour | % of tour cost | 15% to 20% |
| Bus or coach day tour | % of tour cost | 10% to 20% |
| Private tour or guide | % of tour cost | 15% to 20% |
| Multi-day escorted tour | $ per person, per day | $7 to $12 |
| Free walking tour | $ per person, per day | $10 to $20 |
On the percentage rows the rate is applied to the total tour cost once. A three-day private guide hire does not get three times the percentage: enter the full trip price (a $500 a day guide booked for three days is $1,500) and take the percentage of that. Adding days in the calculator changes the driver line and the per-day breakdown, never the guide percentage.
Region matters as much as tour type. US tipping runs 15% to 20% on most paid tours. In Europe, 5% to 10% is normal and 10% reads as generous. In much of Asia tipping is not expected, though it is usually received warmly. The calculator ships with US norms, so on a European tour either pick "Good" or switch on the custom rate and enter your own figure.
Tipping the driver, the local guide, and everyone else on the trip
The driver tip sits on top of the guide tip. It is never carved out of it. That trips up more people than anything else here, and the reason is that two conventions get quoted side by side. On a short day coach tour run by an owner-operator, one pooled tip handed to the guide is normal. On an escorted multi-day tour, every major operator lists the tour director and the coach driver as separate lines with separate rates.
Rough figures for the other people on the trip:
- Coach driver, multi-day: around $3 per person per day, more if the driving is long or difficult
- Coach driver, day trip: $1 to $2 per passenger
- Local day guide who joins for a single city: $2 to $10 each
- More than one driver on the trip: tip each of them, not one pooled amount
Before you budget any of it, read the pre-departure pack. Some operators bundle gratuities into the fare outright, some pre-collect them, and some list a suggested amount that the group is expected to hand over at the farewell dinner. Five minutes of reading saves an awkward last morning. For the airport transfer at either end of the trip, our rideshare tip calculator covers the same ground, and valet tips follow the same flat-dollar pattern as the driver line here.
What tour guides should know about the tips they collect
Tip income for a guide arrives as a wad of mixed cash at the end of a trip, often in more than one currency, often across back-to-back tours in a busy season. Rebuilding that from memory months later is close to impossible. The unit worth recording is the tour, not the pay period.
A few habits make the season easier to account for. Log each tour's tips the day it ends, while you still remember which group was which. Keep cash and card gratuities on separate lines, since they land on different timelines and pass through different hands. And when you tip out a driver or a local fixer, record it as its own entry instead of netting it off quietly. What you want in January is one clean export, not a shoebox.
Tips are taxable income and guides are expected to report them. Some tipped workers can also claim a federal deduction on qualifying tip income. Working out whether you are one of them is a job for the no-tax-on-tips calculator, not for an etiquette page. If you would rather keep a running record than rebuild one, Server44 logs tips per shift or per tour and exports the year as a PDF or CSV.
Frequently Asked Questions
Common questions about tour guide tip calculator
How much should you tip a tour guide?
It depends on the kind of tour. On a paid walking, bus, or day tour, 10% to 20% of the tour price is the usual band, with 15% a safe middle. On a private tour, most travellers land at 15% to 20%. Multi-day escorted tours work differently. There you tip a flat amount per person per day, usually $7 to $12, with $10 the figure quoted most often. The calculator switches method based on the tour type rather than forcing one rule onto all six.
Do you tip the tour guide and the bus driver separately?
On a multi-day escorted tour, yes. Operator guidance from the large tour companies lists the tour director and the coach driver as separate lines, with the driver at roughly $3 per person per day. On a short day tour with a small operator, one pooled tip handed to the guide is more common. Tick the driver box in the calculator when the two are tipped separately, and the driver amount is added on top of the guide tip rather than taken out of it. If more than one driver works your trip, tip each of them. Our rideshare tip calculator covers the same question for airport transfers.
What is a good tip for a multi-day tour?
Multiply the number of people by the number of days by the daily rate. For a couple on a seven-day escorted tour at the standard $10 per person per day, that is $140 for the tour director, plus about $42 for the driver at $3 per person per day. Tip at the end of the trip rather than daily, in cash, and in the local currency where you can.
Should you tip on a free walking tour?
Yes. Free walking tours are pay what you want, and the guide is usually paid nothing except what the group hands over at the end. $10 to $20 per person is standard in Europe and North America, $5 to $10 in much of Latin America, Asia, and Africa, and $15 to $25 in cities with a high cost of living such as London, Paris, and New York. Select "Free walking tour" in the calculator and it drops the percentage model, which does not work when there is no bill.
Is the tip based on the tour cost per person or the total booking?
Enter the cost per person, for the whole tour, and the calculator multiplies by your party size. Enter the full trip price rather than a daily rate: a three-day private guide at $500 a day is entered as $1,500. On percentage-based tours the rate is applied to the total cost once, not once per day, which is why adding days does not increase the guide tip.
How much do you tip a tour guide in Europe compared with the US?
Lower. US tipping runs 15% to 20% on most paid tours. In Europe, 5% to 10% is normal and 10% reads as generous, and in much of Asia tipping is not expected at all though it is usually received warmly. The calculator's defaults are set to US norms, so for a European tour either pick "Good" instead of "Great" or switch on the custom rate and enter your own percentage.
When and how should you hand over the tip?
At the end, in cash, in the local currency. On a day tour that means as you say goodbye. On a multi-day trip, most groups do it at the farewell dinner or on the final morning. Cash matters more than usual here, because card tips added to a tour booking often route through the operator rather than reaching the guide directly, and in remote destinations card payments may not be an option at all.
Are tips a tour guide receives taxable?
Yes. Tips are income and guides are expected to report them, whether they arrive as cash at the end of a walk or as a gratuity line added to a booking. Some tipped workers can also claim a federal deduction on qualifying tip income. Whether you are one of them is a tax question rather than an etiquette one, so check it with Server44's no-tax-on-tips calculator. Guides who would rather keep a running record than a carrier bag of receipts can log each tour's tips in the Server44 app and export the year as a PDF or CSV.
