One detail that changes the number: tip on the pre-tax base fare, not the invoice total. Tolls, fuel surcharges, and airport fees are pass-through costs collected by the company, and taxes go to the state. None of that is the driver's work, so none of it belongs in the tip base.
How to tell if gratuity is already in your limo contract
Look at the quote or booking confirmation, not the final card receipt. Limo contracts are usually itemized, and the line you want will be labeled one of three ways:
- Gratuity (often 15% to 20%): intended for the driver, and the one this calculator is built around.
- Service charge: charged by the company. Some of it may reach the chauffeur, some may not.
- Administrative fee: almost always the operator's, not the driver's.

Corporate accounts, pre-paid bookings, wedding packages, and party bus rentals are where gratuity is most often included quietly. If you did not book the car yourself, assume there is a gratuity line until you have seen the paperwork.
Working out the additional tip without double-tipping
Here is the trap. A $600 contract with 20% gratuity included does not contain $120 of gratuity. The 20% was charged on the base fare, and the base plus the gratuity is what adds up to $600. Strip it back out and the base fare is $600 divided by 1.20, which is $500, so the included gratuity is $100. Adding another 20% on top would take the driver to roughly 40%.
The calculator does that de-embedding for you, then values the service at the rate you picked and subtracts what has already been charged:
- $600 charter, 20% included, 20% target: base $500, included $100, target $100, so the additional tip is $0. The contract already covers it.
- $600 charter, 18% included, 20% target: base $508.47, included $91.53, target $101.69, so the additional tip is about $10.
The percentage part never goes negative. If your contract already beats the rate you picked, the shortfall clamps to zero and nothing extra is owed. Flat add-ons behave differently on purpose: money for extra stops, wait time, or a baggage-claim meet-and-greet sits outside that clamp, so a $10 extra-stop fee still shows up even on a fully pre-tipped contract. Tipping by occasion: airport, wedding, prom, and party bus
Airport transfers. Straight percentage territory, 18% to 20% on a $150 to $200 transfer. If the chauffeur parks and meets you inside arrivals with a name sign rather than curbside, add $5 to $10 for the parking and waiting time. Tick the meet-and-greet box for that.
Weddings. 20% to 25%, or a flat $100 to $150 per driver if the car is on standby for several hours. Wedding transport packages are the single most likely place to find the gratuity pre-loaded, so check the contract before budgeting a second one. Proms. Usually parent-booked and paid well in advance, which means the gratuity is frequently already in the price. Enter the included percentage and see whether anything more is owed. A small cash tip at pickup still goes over well.
Party buses. 15% to 20% of the rental, so roughly $120 to $160 on an $800 booking, split across the group. Party bus contracts include the gratuity more often than not, so the split figure is usually a few dollars a head rather than the twenty people expect.
